Sporting venues are full of distracting background elements and the blur capability becomes even more important in these situations. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. For a more significant magnification at any focus distance with no change in MFD, mount a Sigma Global Vision Teleconverter behind this lens.  That lens has good optics, but is so heavy that it's impossible to shoot without a tripod and gimbal head. Autofocus is fast and sure, and you can grab the focus ring at any time for instant manual focus override. As much as the Sports version of this lens is about build quality, the Contemporary lens is about light weight and lower price. This ad-free website's biggest source of support is when you use these links, especially and at Amazon when you get , regardless of the country in which you live. This lens can easily be handheld and used in this way for long periods of time. Longer focal lengths with their greater magnification require faster shutter speeds to deliver sharp handheld results than their wider angle counterparts do. Leave it in AF, in which setting you may grab the ring for instant manual override Use the MF setting only if you want focus to stay where you set it and not move if you tap your shutter button. This focal length range permits ideal framing over a significant range of subject distances, requiring less image quality-detrimental and modestly time consuming cropping in post. This Canon is also a top professional product, and sells today for a song. Tamron does not seal its boxes, so buy at retail; only buy from approved sources. I will point out that Sigma advertises the Sport as having “twist and push-pull” functionality for zoom, but the Contemporary is advertised as only “twist.”  Frankly, that's marketing crap. With its rounded diaphragm, I don't expect to see sunstars on brilliant points of light. While the focal length range on this combo looks amazing, the resulting image quality is. shows the new lens having a very strong advantage at the long end. The focus limiter switch is designed for this purpose. Using the Sigma Dock, this lens' OS can be further configured to one of three settings described by Sigma as: Dynamic View Mode – This mode offers a recognizable OS effect to the image in the viewfinder. Tamron offers a lens very similar to Sigma’s “Contemporary” lens. Focus calibration issues can cause miss-focusing, which can strongly impact image quality. Sure, its body is made of plastic and it has no weather sealing but it has a level of fit and finish that I did not expect. The lens seemed a whole lot more “serious” in my hands than I would have expected from the photos I saw of it online.  Each copy of a lens performs differently, so to see some slight variation is normal. The Portage Valley ended up being the highest concentration of bald eagles that we spotted during our time in Alaska.

Sigma has addressed the exposure issue by providing a comfortable silicone/rubber-like protective cover as seen below. Diana and I recently took the opportunity to travel to Alaska, a place that I’ve wanted to visit so many times as a child but had never been. Molded in ribbing at the end of the hood adds a grip surface to facilitate installation and removal.  Sometimes the lens manufacturers get very creative with this number. As I've overstated, I am not a fan of the rather narrow categorization structure. That said, it’s a rare combination that I attempted. Large filters are also more expensive than smaller filters. This helps to ensure the composition of images quickly. Price and Compatibility While this is not a cheap lens, it does wear a very good value price tag. Sometimes a lens can be made compatible by the manufacturer, sometimes not. The Tamron has a smoother, larger, easier-to-use manual focus ring. APS-C format body owners will not notice vignetting when using this lens, regardless of aperture setting. At this latitude and time of year, the sun stayed relatively low in the sky and that offered some excellent conditions for photography. VR and IS is well behaved and works surprisingly well. So, you will recognize some content shared between these two reviews. See Nikon Lens Compatibility, and read down the "AF-I/AF-S," "G" and "VR" columns. It's smooth and easy to turn, even pointed straight up or down. Use the site's various tools to make your own comparisons, including with the many lenses I did not specifically include here. I already mentioned that the focus ring is not the easiest to locate via tactile methods, but the large zoom ring is the complete opposite. Ease of Use I don't normally include “Ease of Use” in my lens reviews because generally, all lenses are easy to use. Again, AI Servo results were similar with a majority of images being properly focused. Bird photographers never have too much focal length and having a zoom range to work with means that even large and close birds and other wildlife can be framed environmentally, showing the ideal amount of landscape along with the animal. I got the Sony mount version so there was no VC switch. From the observation decks of the Conservation Center, and the relatively close proximity of the animals, it wasn’t at all necessary to use the full-reach of the lens’s zoom capability. The end results from this lens' stabilizer are good – OS is an important feature for this handholdable long lens. A lens plate such as this one sliding in a clamp provides a range of options for balancing the lens. No camera will be able to correct it automatically; Tamron doesn't make DSLRs and neither Nikon nor Canon are going to add this lens to their firmware.  The Sport version MIGHT have just the tiniest little improvement in resolution. Haze can reduce contrast and heat waves/shimmer can quickly destroy image sharpness by micro-distorting details. BM Premium 2-Pack of LP-E10. Having these long focal lengths to tightly frame the animals with is definitely an advantage. As with the rest of Sigma's similar cases, I would find a few additional inches of length useful, allowing a mounted DSLR to fit inside. The zoom ring is very stiff, and needs to be to prevent the lens creep. Turning on the rapid-fire continuous shutter was also very helpful, of course. Teenitor Lens Filter Gimbal Cover.  When these lenses zoom in and out, they suck in a significant amount of air. We were also lucky enough to encounter our first “real” wildlife as we drove back. The lenses are so extremely close in terms of sharpness that it's really hard to pick a winner.  What I learned from this test is that the price of the lens is NOT a good indicator of the performance of the lens–at least in this case. It undergoes extreme tidal changes that fill and drain the waterway. There is no problem with vignetting, even with stacks of thick filters. Very nice is the white backgrounds on the AF and lock switches, visually indicating their set positions. I'll talk more about the Custom switch under the dock subheading below.  Just because I'm hungry right now, I'll put that in terms I can better relate to. I'm not saying that you will not eventually get tired of holding this lens, but I am saying that most people will find it very usable handheld in many situations. The loss of infinity focusing is a notable penalty to using extension tubes. The Canon is significantly more expensive and focuses more accurately.

Some clicks are heard at OS startup and shutdown, but the operational hum is quiet.  As long as they have the same focus motor, my guess was that the contemporary would be a bit quicker. Tamron does not seal its boxes, so buy at retail since God only knows what has happened or where the lens has been before it's bought by you; only buy from approved sources.  Realistically, this would be a horrible user experience to push/pull with this lens. Obtaining a retail copy of this lens for review proved easy. Bokeh, the character of out of focus backgrounds, not simply how far out of focus they are, is great. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 Digital. Sigma has done a nice job of balancing functionality with light weight on this tripod ring design. The focus scale uses the same color for feet and for meters, so it always takes too long to read. If you encounter this issue, the best solution may be to take extra insurance shots. The tripod ring is relatively smooth with only minor slip-stick behavior showing just before fully tightened.  It's so lightweight that it makes wildlife photography a lot more fun. For what ought to be a giant lens, it's trivially easy to handhold, zoom, focus and shoot. For many more comparisons, review the complete using the site's Lens Spec tool. I found my sample sometimes overexposed, but no worries: that's why there's an exposure compensation button on our cameras.  But after spending a lot of time with both of these lenses, I found that ease of use was one of my biggest complaints with the Sport version of this lens. As with most lenses having a zoom lock switch, this lens will not extend even with pressure applied when locked at the widest angle focal length. There was a lot to see and shoot and the lens performed a lot better than I initially expected. If shooting with the Sony mount version, my recommendation is to only pair this lens with a Sony body that has SteadyShot. Most of Sony’s A-mount bodies have SteadyShot and the Canon and Nikon variants of the lens have optical image stabilization. Videographers especially appreciate parfocalness in a lens, and they will also appreciate the lack of focus breathing this lens shows. The same company introduced both lenses at nearly the same time, so the same AF technology and algorithms were available for each.  I started at these photos for quite some time seeing if I could pick a winner, but even zoomed in to absurd magnifications, the results are a dead heat. Compatibility with the Sigma USB Dock is risk reducing as Sigma can release firmware updates for dock-compatible lenses.

These settings become immediately available at the throw of a switch. Considering its huge range, this Tamron looks and feels great. To prevent this effect, Sigma provides a zoom lock switch.
