In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system can be taken on the go so players can enjoy a full home console experience anytime, anywhere. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system, with unprecedented new play styles brought to life by the two new Joy-Con controllers.

PLAY ANYWHERE

Home Gaming System

At home the main unit rests in the Nintendo Switch dock, which connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room.

On-the-Go

Lift Nintendo Switch from the dock and instantly transition to handheld mode for on-the-go gaming. By sharing Joy-Con, players can go head-to-head while away from home. You can also enjoy the same great games in tabletop mode by using the included stand to prop the system up.

New Play Styles

Remove the detachable Joy-Con from either side of Nintendo Switch for more play styles:

  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

The Switch’s stereo speakers are surprisingly loud, although it seems to favor treble far more than bass. Children may learn for the first time that face-to-face interaction will always beat a Snapchat video, text message or emoji. The Switch accommodates loners, too. Its games offer an intimate form of gameplay unseen on rival consoles, and over all the system’s versatility makes it worth the money. No matter how good the hardware is, a game console is still just a means by which to interact with games. Compounding that frustration is just how close Nintendo comes to a better solution. The only thing you can do right now with Facebook and Twitter is post screenshots. But those aren’t coming until later this year, leaving as the biggest reason to invest now. The picture quality on the built-in screen is unremarkable: When being used as a portable, the system displays a lower pixel resolution than when it is docked for use on a TV. There is a grip attachment that you can slide both Joy-Con controllers into, but while it makes the shape feel more familiar, it wasn’t a drastic enough change that I’d consider it an essential accessory for playing on the go. That’s not to say I think it’s going to break anytime soon, but given how sturdy everything else is, the kickstand’s hinge is more noticeable. There’s even a capture button on the left Joy-Con for quick screenshots. That’s a lot of different ways to control the Switch, but they’re all variations of the same scheme. Except for a few essential knobs like power and volume, the Switch tablet itself is pretty light on buttons. In TV or tabletop mode, the controls work exactly as they do when attached to the console. I have little doubt Nintendo’s first-party lineup will be amazing - Breath of the Wild alone is almost worth the cost of admission here - but the company’s weak spots have always been continuing and expanding third-party support, as well as providing a robust online service. This problem persisted for an entire day, and only after the device was left unplugged overnight did it wake back up with a low-battery icon. There’s no other way to put this: the limitation is arbitrary and ridiculous.

Updated: Every game available for Nintendo Switch.

The game, which is generally designed for two players, asks each gamer to take a Joy-Con and use its motion sensors to compete in various absurd activities. Once you hold and use the Switch, it just makes sense. Though the dock is bulkier than it needs to be, it’s also not meant for traveling, and even combined, it’s still thinner than any other current-generation console. Outside of a small flicker every now and then, the process of moving from one screen to the next is seamless. Now I can take with me wherever I go - not some limited version, mind you, but the full console experience. It also gets lots of glare in a well-lit living room. Finally, battery life was short. The physical connection on the tablet is, thankfully, very sturdy, but conversely that means it took me a few tries to get used to the gesture of pulling out the Joy-Con while keeping a bit of pressure on the tablet itself so it didn’t also lift up. That doesn’t sound like a lot in writing, but it was more than enough for a game that demands some serious attention - and certainly enough if I’m playing it while in transit somewhere. The controllers smoothly slide on and off the device, and docking the Switch is as easy as dropping it in and letting it snap in place. The Switch, notably, doesn’t currently have a web browser - or rather, it has the bare minimum of a WebKit-based browser needed for logging into public hotspots. There’s an odd asymmetry to the Joy-Con button layout, and the reason is that when held horizontally, each one can act as a standalone mini gamepad with a button layout reminiscent of the Super Nintendo controller. Not only was there a console box, but there was also a superfluous, bulky touch pad controller, along with all the Wiimotes, the rectangular controllers, which had to be charged between gaming sessions. And for whatever reason, the small size and button density felt more noticeable in this setup. I’ve found myself surprisingly geeking out over the docking process itself, a rather clever recess that glides the tablet into just the right position so the USB-C plug connects without any scuffing.
